Paul Oulden: South African Boxer and WBO Title Challenger
Paul Oulden is a South African boxer whose professional record includes a challenge for the World Boxing Organization light flyweight title. In November 1994, he faced Scotland’s Paul Weir for the vacant championship in Irvine.
Weir won the 12-round contest by unanimous decision. The fight appears in Oulden’s professional record and in title histories for the WBO junior flyweight division.
Results before the world title opportunity
Oulden debuted in February 1991 with a points victory over Isiah Zulu in Pretoria. His early career included wins over Steven Maboa, Frans Mangate and Vincent Nciwa during 1992, followed by further appearances around South Africa.
He stopped Eddie Vallejo in Uitenhage and Asdrubal Velasquez in Durban in late 1993. In August 1994, he defeated Simphiwe Mfaniso by unanimous decision in Johannesburg, preceding the November 23 meeting with Weir at Irvine’s Magnum Centre.
Placing the Weir fight in context
The vacant WBO championship offered Oulden a chance to win a world title abroad, but Weir’s decision victory left him an unsuccessful challenger. The distinction matters: appearing in a world championship contest does not itself establish a championship reign.
Oulden returned to South African competition afterward, losing to Leonard Makhanya and Phindile Ngingi in 1995. BoxerList’s recorded career totals are twelve wins and five defeats. Its final listed bout was against Andrew Maqabe in Welkom in September 1998. That chronology places the Scottish title challenge within a longer professional schedule rather than treating it as an isolated appearance.
