Fedor Emelianenko: PRIDE Champion and MMA Legacy
Fedor Emelianenko, known as “The Last Emperor,” became one of heavyweight MMA’s defining figures through his championship run in PRIDE and a career that spanned several major promotions. His mix of sambo, striking and fast transitions made his fights recognizable across eras.
Rise through RINGS and PRIDE
Emelianenko began his professional career in Japan’s RINGS organization before moving to PRIDE. In 2003, he defeated Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira to become PRIDE heavyweight champion. He later recorded notable wins over Nogueira, Mirko Cro Cop, Mark Coleman and Kevin Randleman, helping build a reputation as one of the era’s leading heavyweights.
A career across promotions
After PRIDE closed, Emelianenko continued competing in Strikeforce, M-1 Global, Rizin and Bellator. His bouts with top heavyweights from different organizations kept him in the sport’s biggest conversations, while his compact, aggressive style and sambo background distinguished him from many larger opponents. His career record includes a long unbeaten stretch during his peak years.
Final fight and retirement
Emelianenko retired after facing Ryan Bader in the main event of Bellator 290 on February 4, 2023. Bader retained the heavyweight title with a first-round TKO at 2:30. Emelianenko left his gloves in the cage after the bout, marking the end of his professional MMA career.
