Rizin 29: A Night of Thrilling Fights and Unforgettable Moments

Rizin 29, an event that took place on June 27, 2021, was a night filled with thrilling fights and unforgettable moments. The event was held at the Maruzen Intec Arena in Osaka, Japan, and featured a mix of MMA and kickboxing bouts.

The event was originally scheduled for May 23, but was postponed due to a state of emergency declared in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the delay, the event was held with 50% capacity, equaling about 5000 spectators, and it did not disappoint.

The main event of the evening was the continuation of the bantamweight grand prix, with four fights taking place. The MMA affairs were a continuation of the grand prix that kicked off earlier in June at Rizin 28. Several notable stars, including Kai Asakura and Hiromasa Ougikubo, advanced during that night of action. This weekend, veterans Takafumi Otsuka and Masakazu Imanari tried to add their names to that list.

In addition to the tournament bouts, Rizin 29 also featured several other compelling match-ups in each discipline. In MMA, Yasuke Yachi took on Yuki Kawana, while Daichi Kitakata met Yusaku Nakamura. In kickboxing, Yoshinari Nadaka clashed with Chikai Iimura in a 115-pound contest.

One of the highlights of the night was the four-man 60 kg kickboxing tournament, featuring Ryo Takahashi, Koji, Genji Umeno, and Taiju Shiratori. The tournament ended with Taiju Shiratori defeating Koji “Kouzi” Tanaka by decision, crowning him the champion of the one-night kickboxing tournament.

The co-main event of the evening featured Takafumi Otsuka taking on Yamashita Hiroki. The main event of the night was a bantamweight bout between Yuto Hokamura and Kuya Ito. The 24-year old Ito, who has been fighting since 2013, was looking to build on his previous win against Hiroki Yamashita.

Rizin 29 was a night of high stakes and thrilling fights, showcasing the best of both MMA and kickboxing. The event was a testament to the resilience of the fighters and the organization, overcoming the challenges posed by the pandemic to deliver an unforgettable night of combat sports.
