Eric Griffin: Remembering a Boxing Legend

Eric Griffin, a boxing icon who left an indelible mark on the sport, passed away on October 7, 2023, at the age of 55. Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, on November 3, 1967, Griffin’s journey to greatness began at a tender age, fueled by an unwavering passion for the sweet science.

From an early age, Griffin’s talent was undeniable. He won his first amateur tournament at the tender age of 13, weighing a mere 80 pounds. His meteoric rise continued, and in 1988, he suffered one of his rare losses when he was outpointed by Michael Carbajal in the Olympic Trials. Undeterred, Griffin secured his place at the 1992 Olympic Summer Games in Barcelona, representing the United States.

Griffin’s amateur career was nothing short of remarkable. He won gold medals at the 1989 and 1991 World Championships, cementing his status as one of the greatest amateur boxers of all time. In 2000, a USA Boxing publication named him among the top ten U.S. amateur boxers of the twentieth century, a testament to his exceptional skills and achievements.

Despite his illustrious amateur career, Griffin’s professional journey was marked by disappointment. He turned pro in 1992 but struggled to replicate his amateur success, retiring in 1997 after being TKO’d in his first and only title shot for the vacant WBO light flyweight title against Jesus Chong. His professional record stood at 16 wins and 4 losses.

After retiring from boxing, Griffin returned to his hometown of Broussard, where he worked as a short-order cook, following in the footsteps of his maternal grandmother. Despite the challenges he faced in his professional career, Griffin’s legacy as an amateur boxing legend remains etched in the annals of the sport.

Eric Griffin’s life was a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of excellence. His unwavering dedication to boxing and his remarkable achievements as an amateur boxer will forever inspire generations of aspiring athletes. Though he may be gone, his spirit and legacy will continue to resonate within the boxing community and beyond.
