Elwin Soto: Rising Star in Junior Flyweight Boxing

Elwin Soto Castro, born on December 23, 1996, in San Felipe, Mexico, has quickly become a prominent figure in the world of professional boxing. Known by his nickname “La Pulga” (The Flea), Soto has made a significant impact in the junior flyweight division, capturing the attention of boxing enthusiasts worldwide.

Standing at 5 feet 3 inches tall, Soto’s journey to boxing stardom began in 2016 when he turned professional. Despite facing an early setback with a loss in 2017, Soto’s determination and skill propelled him forward, leading to an impressive record of 20 wins and only 3 losses, with 13 of those victories coming by way of knockout.

Soto’s career reached new heights in June 2019 when he challenged then-WBO junior flyweight champion Ángel Acosta. In a stunning upset, Soto secured a 12th-round knockout victory, claiming the world title and establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with in the 108-pound weight class.

Following his title win, Soto successfully defended his belt twice. His first defense came against Edward Heno in October 2019, where he emerged victorious in a closely contested unanimous decision. Soto’s second defense saw him dominate Carlos Buitrago in October 2020, further solidifying his status as champion.

However, Soto’s reign as WBO junior flyweight champion came to an end in October 2021 when he lost a split decision to Jonathan González. Despite this setback, Soto’s performances continued to earn him recognition, with The Ring magazine ranking him as the fourth-best junior flyweight in the world.

In a move to advance his career, Soto signed with Matchroom Boxing in April 2021. This partnership with Eddie Hearn’s promotional company opened up new opportunities for the Mexican fighter, including potential unification bouts and increased exposure on global platforms.

Soto’s fighting style is characterized by his aggressive approach and powerful punching, particularly evident in his left hook. His ability to finish fights, as demonstrated by his high knockout percentage, makes him an exciting fighter to watch.

Despite facing challenges, including a recent hand surgery that has temporarily sidelined him, Soto’s future in boxing remains bright. At just 27 years old, he has already accomplished much and continues to be a top contender in the junior flyweight division.

As Elwin Soto recovers and prepares for his return to the ring, boxing fans eagerly anticipate his next moves. With his proven skill, determination, and the backing of a major promotional company, Soto is well-positioned to reclaim championship glory and potentially unify titles in the coming years.
